"Teststrecke" Schwarzkopf classic in Karlsruhe, Germany

Post by Tim_B » Sat May 31, 2014 5:29 pm

I had the opportunity to ride this beautiful 1979 Schwarzkopf "Doppel Looping" at a local fair in Karlsruhe, Germany, so I thought I'd share it. ; )

It was previously located in Argentina, then Brazil, and after that remained as "Laser" in Dorney Park up until 2 German showmen bought it in 2008. It was refurbished and rethemed, and entirely new trains were manufactured by SAT Rides, now part of SUNKID group I believe. It tours primarily in Germany, and aside from a few wild mouses, larger coasters are a rare sight on small German fairs.

These are the comfortable trains. Notice the pleasant lack of over-the-shoulder restraints.

The ride's homepage advertises it as one of the most quiet and smooth rides in existence, and mentions 5,2 G's max.
While the forces did not feel that extreme (could have been due to the almost empty train), it was indeed very quiet and incredibly smooth. Even with the ride having been refurbished some years ago, the total absence of shakes or vibrations is more than impressive for a 35 year-old coaster. I guess Schwarzkopf lived up to it's reputation concerning this one : )

Definitely a great ride, but I find Olympia Looping to be much better and much more thrilling even with it's shoulder crushing overhead restraints. Teststrecke's custom lap bars I found very uncomfortable. Weird isn't it that I'll always go for lap bars over OTSR's every time, yet this is one ride comparison where the OTSR coaster is better for me!
Cheers!

Tim, thanks :-)

Carl, I'll be able to tell you once I've ridden Teststrecke, but being better than Olympia Looping is near impossible :-)
